چکیده

Fluids with particles in suspension can be extracted through an orifice until particles bridge across the opening and clog it. We derive and study a mathematical model to predict the volume of fluid that can be extracted before clogging. Numerical simulations and closed-form upper and lower bound solutions show the dependency of the expected extracted volume on the volume fraction of particles in suspension and the relative particle-to-orifice size. These results are the first step toward a comprehensive understanding of the physical mechanisms leading to filter clogging with relevance to geomaterials, biomaterials, and industrial applications. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Volume of Suspension That Flows through a Small Orifice Before It Clogs

We consider the following experiment. A container is filled with a suspension consisting of particles immersed in an incompressible liquid. An opening is made on the container wall and the suspension flows through the opening. We develop a mathematical model to compute the expected volume of suspension extracted before particles clog the opening. Our studies are relevant to the understanding of...

Fish mouths as engineering structures for vortical cross-step filtration

Suspension-feeding fishes such as goldfish and whale sharks retain prey without clogging their oral filters, whereas clogging is a major expense in industrial crossflow filtration of beer, dairy foods and biotechnology products. Fishes' abilities to retain particles that are smaller than the pore size of the gill-raker filter, including extraction of particles despite large holes in the filter,...

Clogging of Model Pores with Brownian Particles

Pore clogging with Brownian particles is of wide interest in filtration processes. We perform experiments where model sub-micrometric pores are clogged using a Brownian suspension. We study the influence of the ionic strength on the clog formation dynamics. The erosion/drag force competition is also studied using a crossflow in the inlet channel. The way the clogs disintegrate after the cloggin...

Transition-state theory predicts clogging at the microscale

Clogging is one of the main failure mechanisms encountered in industrial processes such as membrane filtration. Our understanding of the factors that govern the build-up of fouling layers and the emergence of clogs is largely incomplete, so that prevention of clogging remains an immense and costly challenge. In this paper we use a microfluidic model combined with quantitative real-time imaging ...

Mechanism for clogging of microchannels.

We investigate clogging of microchannels at the single-pore level using microfluidic devices as model porous media. The process of clogging is studied at low volume fractions and high flow rates, a technologically important regime. We show that clogging is independent of particle flow rate and volume fraction, indicating that collective effects do not play an important role. Instead, the averag...
